What is LASIK?

LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis)

LASIK is a type of refractive surgery for correcting myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. LASIK is performed by ophthalmologists using a laser, and is similar to other surgical corrective procedures such as photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) though it provides benefits such as faster patient recovery. Both LASIK and PRK represent advances over radial keratotomy in the surgical treatment of vision problems, and are thus viable alternatives to wearing corrective eyeglasses or contact lenses for many patients.

Am I a Candidate For LASIK?

If you are 18 years of age or older, you may be a good candidate for LASIK as long as you and your eyes are healthy. You should have a refractive error that falls within the FDA-approved range, and a stable prescription for the past 18-24 months.

You would not be a good candidate if you have cataracts, keratoconus (an abnormal thinning of the cornea) or any ocular disease that is uncontrolled. For a complete list of contraindications, please speak with one of Coastal Vision Medical Group's experienced LASIK counselors.

Our surgeons at Coastal Vision Medical Group are considered by many to be the premier cataract and refractive surgery experts in Southern California. They can carefully help you choose the most appropriate surgery.
