Examine the eye

At Coastal Vision Medical Group Medical Group, we have some of the most advanced glaucoma testing devices available today. Our glaucoma specialists have years of experience in glaucoma screening, management, and caring for all types of glaucoma.

Measuring Intra-Ocular Pressure (IOP)

Goldmann Applanation Tonometry (GAT) is the gold standard technique for measuring IOP in patients who have glaucoma. There are many other ways of measuring IOP, but they are not quite as accurate as of the Goldmann technique.

Gonioscopy

This is a technique in which a special contact lens is used to view the internal drainage structures of the eye. Our glaucoma specialists commonly use gonioscopy to find clues that aid them in identifying different types of glaucoma.

Ophthalmoscopy

This is a technique that requires a special lens that allows our glaucoma specialists to look inside your eye and examine the optic nerve. Since the optic nerve is the structure of the eye that is damaged in glaucoma, it is imperative that you allow a highly trained physician to examine your optic nerves in order to rule out the possibility of glaucoma or to monitor your glaucoma.

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)

OCT is a device that allows doctors to observe a patient’s Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer (RNFL), and compare it to a group of normal individuals. When glaucoma causes damage to the optic nerve, the RNFL atrophies or thins out. This technology allows our glaucoma specialists at Coastal Vision Medical Group Medical Group to evaluate your optic nerve and RNFL on a microscopic level, and possibly identify glaucoma at an earlier stage than previously possible by examination and visual field testing.

Visual Field Testing

When there is enough damage to the optic nerve from glaucoma, a person will start to lose their peripheral or side vision. If glaucoma goes untreated, a person may lose their entire field of vision and be left legally blind. The Humphrey visual field machine is a technology used by our glaucoma specialists to test a patient’s field of vision in order to detect glaucoma or monitor the progression of glaucoma.
