
Dr. Abinaya Thenappan is an ophthalmologist specializing in cataract, refractive, and anterior segment surgery. She is committed to delivering personalized, high-quality vision care by combining advanced surgical training with a thoughtful, patient-centered approach.
Dr. Thenappan earned her medical degree from Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, where she was actively involved in ophthalmic research, publishing peer-reviewed studies and presenting her work at national conferences. A Southern California native, she returned home to complete her ophthalmology residency at the USC Roski Eye Institute and Los Angeles General Medical Center, where she received comprehensive training in medical and surgical ophthalmology.
Following residency, Dr. Thenappan completed advanced fellowship training in cataract and refractive surgery at the Cleveland Eye Clinic, a highly regarded program known for excellence in modern refractive and cataract care. Her fellowship training emphasized refined surgical technique, thoughtful case selection, and the integration of advanced technology to support precision, safety, and consistent outcomes. She also participated in multiple clinical trials evaluating refractive technologies and intraocular lenses.
Dr. Thenappan was drawn to ophthalmology because of the meaningful impact vision correction can have on patients’ lives. She believes in taking the time to understand each individual’s visual needs, lifestyle, and goals in order to provide well-informed, personalized recommendations. Her approach to care emphasizes careful clinical evaluation, clear communication, and earning patient trust throughout the treatment process.
Outside of the office, Dr. Thenappan enjoys playing tennis, going to the beach, spending time with friends and family, reading mystery novels, and traveling with her husband.
