Common Eye Problems in Summer

Summer is around the corner, and with it comes all the fun of the season. Many people look forward to spending time outside with their families and friends. It is fun because anything goes, and the weather makes playing, exploring, and having adventures easy.

When planning for the season, you rarely look at prepping for a healthier vision. But remember that your vision is much more in danger during summer than in any other season. Firstly, summer comes with a lot of heat and sunlight, all exposing the eyes to several issues.

When planning for a summer with your family, it’s best to spend time planning to care for their eyes. You can take several steps to ensure these common eye problems in summer do not afflict your family. But you must know the problems to expect.

  • Allergies

Many people consider eye allergies a common problem only in spring, but they are also present in summer. Many plants release pollen in the spring, but some do so more actively in summer. Various types of mold plant seeds and pollen are more common in summer.

Eye allergies are usually not fatal but can be pretty uncomfortable while they are there. The common symptoms are dryness, burning, or itching in the eyes. You must cover up when you go out if you have these allergies. Also, improve your hygiene by washing your face whenever you enter the house.

  • Corneal Burns

Summer is the season of the sun, which also means it is UV season. While UV radiation happens throughout the year, it is much more intense during summer. UV harms the skin, and many people always have their sunscreen ready.

However, it also harms your eyes, especially in a heat-intensive season. Exposure to UV in summer can lead to corneal burns or photokeratitis. The best way to handle this is by using wraparound sunglasses with UVA and UVB protection.

  • Dry Eye

Summer’s high temperatures usually call for air conditioning in the house and fans. While air con and fans make it easy to stay in the house, they also harm your eyes. The extreme heat, low humidity, and the use of fans lead to the rapid evaporation of your tear film.

Dry eyes cause a feeling of sand in the eye, and you may feel a stinging sensation. You will also have sensitivity to light and redness of the eyes. You can prevent dry eyes by ensuring you stay hydrated throughout the day. If you notice that you have the condition, you can use prescription eye drops to act as artificial tears and minimize the symptoms.

  • Conjunctivitis

While conjunctivitis can happen in any season, it could be more prevalent in summer, especially when swimming in public pools or lakes. You can pick up harmful bacteria that can infect your eyes in these places. You can mitigate this by wearing swimming goggles before you take a refreshing dip.

  • Stye

Stye is another infection that causes inflammation in one or both eyelids. It can lead to eye redness and pain in the patient and is commonly found in kids.
