Incisions during cataract surgery are necessary to allow your surgeon to gently break up and remove the cloudy lens. Your new replacement Intraocular Lens (IOL) is also put into place through this incision.

Traditional cataract surgery involves making the incision with a hand-held blade and using an ultrasonic device to break up and remove the lens. While this method can still be effective, Coastal Vision Medical Group also offers laser-assisted cataract surgery technology: LenSx® and LENSAR®.

During laser-assisted cataract surgery a computer-guided laser to make incisions, instead of a blade. This allows each cataract surgery to be more precise and more customizable than traditional methods, achieving highly accurate and predictable results.

Laser technology brings a level of safety and accuracy to cataract surgery that has never been realized before.

How Femtosecond Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery Works

Femtosecond laser technology uses automated, computer-controlled laser pulses to create incisions on the lens capsule, crystalline lens and cornea for precisely tailored and accurate results. The quick, 15-30 minute procedure is based on a high-resolution, 3D surgical platform for both the incision and lens fragmentation.

Compare Your Options:

Laser-Assisted vs Traditional Cataract Surgery

  • Procedure is quicker and more comfortable
  • Surgery is more precise for your unique eye and results are more accurate
  • A 3D map is made of your eye prior to surgery and used during each step of the procedure to allow your doctor real-time visualization
  • The laser is programmable and computer-guided
  • Bladeless cataract eye surgery is low risk
  • Less trauma to the eye compared to traditional surgery

LenSx® Laser System

LenSx automates the most challenging steps of traditional cataract surgery. Prior to the introduction of this laser, traditional cataract surgery involved the creation of several small incisions during the procedure. All of these incisions were made manually with a blade. With LenSx, the surgeon can create those incisions with a significantly higher degree of precision acheivable only with laser light. This combined with the augmented reality technology allows your surgeon to see the activity taking place in real time during your cararact procedure.

  • The laser system converts advanced images of your eye into a 3-D model which are used ti calculate a customized treatment just for you.
  • More precise incision
  • May reduce need for glasses after surgery
  • Corrects for small amounts of Astigmatism for crisp, clear vision

LENSAR® Laser System

With the introduction of the LENSAR® Laser System, laser cataract surgery has become a reality, and your surgeon can now remove your cataract in a more advanced way. Laser cataract surgery is made even more precise by Augmented Reality, a unique imaging system that provides your surgeon with a sophisticated 3-D view of your eye to help plan and treat your cataract. With this advanced technology, your surgeon can offer you a better, more precise cataract removal procedure that is customized to your eye’s own unique size and shape.

  • A unique, high-resolution, 3-D view of your eye that allows your surgeon to tailor your treatment, which can improve visual outcomes.
  • More precise incision
  • May reduce need for glasses after surgery
  • Corrects for small amounts of Astigmatism for crisp, clear vision
